MUMBAI – The area sown with kharif crops in Gujarat reached 1.27 million hectares as of Monday, down more than 62% on year from 3.39 million hectares covered in the same period last year, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. Of the normal acreage for the season, which is 8.53 million hectares, nearly 15% has been covered so far.

 

The acreage under paddy rose to 19,324 hectares from 4,558 hectares a year ago, the report showed. The area sown with maize slipped to 15,915 hectares from 16,263 hectares last year, and that with bajra also fell to 3,318 hectares from 14,421 hectares a year ago. 

 

Tur acreage in the state was down at 4,953 hectares from 22,706 hectares last year, according to the report. Moong acreage fell to 284 hectares from 3,995 hectares, while the area sown with urad was also down at 215 hectares from 3,265 hectares a year ago. The total area sown with pulses in the state was 5,479 hectares, down from 30,415 hectares last year.

 

The total acreage under oilseeds was 429,305 hectares, down from 1.67 million hectares covered a year ago, as per the report. Groundnut acreage fell to 412,795 hectares from 1.54 million hectares last year. The area sown with soybean fell to 15,406 hectares from 120,560 hectares last year.

 

Cotton acreage in the state declined to 683,554 hectares from 1.40 million hectares last year, and that of vegetables fell to 41,696 hectares from 72,458 hectares a year ago.

 

Kharif crops are sown at the beginning of the southwest monsoon season around June and harvested around October. During June, the state recorded 82?low normal rainfall at 20.5 millimetres, according to data from the India Meteorological Department. The southwest monsoon hit Gujarat on Jun. 24, nine days from the normal onset date of Jun. 15.

 

The delay in onset of the monsoon, along with the weak presence of the monsoon trough once it had advanced over the state, resulted in deficient rainfall over Gujarat for the first month of the southwest monsoon season. Sowing of kharif crops was off to a strong start in Gujarat this year due to a boost in groundnut and cotton acreage amid availability of water resources such as reservoirs and dams. However, kharif sowing in the state has been unable to keep up the pace because of the continued deficiency in rainfall.  End
