MUMBAI – Prices of wheat and maize showed mixed trends, while prices of rice were unchanged in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Wheat and maize prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, rose due to a slowdown in arrivals as farmers are busy preparing for and sowing kharif crops, they said. Rice prices are likely to rise in the near term due to concerns about lower kharif production, they said.

 

Prices of WHEAT in Indore rose by INR 30 per 100 kilograms to INR 2,710 per 100 kg Tuesday, said Gaurav Kochar, a local trader. Prices have risen due to a slowdown in arrivals, he said. Many farmers are too busy preparing their fields for sowing kharif crops to bring their wheat stocks to the market, he said. The monsoon advanced over Madhya Pradesh in the past few days, and the state began receiving ample showers during the period, he said. As such, farmers have begun preparations for sowing, he said. Most farmers who cultivate wheat during the rabi season grow soybean during the kharif season, he said.

 

Prices of wheat in Vashi, Navi Mumbai, were steady at INR 2,700 per 100 kg, said Devendra Vora, a wholesale trader. Prices have stabilised after jumping by INR 100 per 100 kg on Monday, he said. Concerns about below-normal rainfall during the southwest monsoon and northeast monsoon due to El Nino conditions had fanned fears about lower production of both kharif and rabi crops this year, sending prices higher, he said.

 

Prices are likely to rise further in the near term as worries about production are likely to persist, Vora said. Prices could also be supported by delay in commencement of the open-market sales scheme for wheat, he said. Typically, during this time of the year, the government begins selling wheat via the open-market sales scheme, he said.

 

MAIZE prices in Indore rose by INR 50 per 100 kg to INR 2,350 per 100 kg Tuesday, Kochar said. Similar to wheat, prices of maize are also supported by a slowdown in arrivals, he said. Growing concerns about kharif maize production this year are also supporting prices, he said. Forecasts of below-normal showers during the rest of the monsoon are likely to lead to lower acreage and, subsequently, lower production this year, he said. Maize acreage across the country during the ongoing kharif season fell to 1.57 million hectares from 1.86 million hectares a year ago, data from the agriculture ministry showed. 

 

Prices of maize in Davanagere, Karnataka, were steady at INR 1,800-INR 2,050 per 100 kg, said Shiva Kumar, a local trader. Arrivals were steady at 800 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), he said.

 

Prices of RICE varieties were steady in Vashi, Vora said. Prices of the 1409 and 1509 varieties of basmati rice were steady at INR 9,600-INR 9,700 per 100 kg and INR 8,200-INR 8,300 per 100 kg, respectively, he said. Prices of the 1121 variety of basmati rice were also steady at INR 10,000–INR 10,200 per 100 kg, he said. The market is monitoring the progress of the monsoon for further cues, he said. Prices of all rice varieties are likely to rise in the near term due to prospects of lower production this year, he said. "Forecasts of below-normal rainfall were being made months ago, but most people were not bothered then. Now, many states are not prepared well to face water shortages during kharif, and this will affect production," he said.  End
