MUMBAI – The southwest monsoon trough advanced further on Tuesday, covering more parts of Madhya Pradesh, most parts of Uttarakhand, the remaining parts of Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and Bihar, and some parts of Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Ladakh, the India Meteorological Department said. Conditions are favourable for the monsoon trough to cover most parts of Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and Punjab, and some parts of Rajasthan in the next two to three days, the weather department said. 

 

The monsoon trough is also likely to cover more parts of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, entire Daman and Diu, the remaining parts of Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Ladakh, and entire Jammu and Kashmir in the next two to three days, the department said. Currently, the trough passes through Surat in Gujarat, Indore, Sagar, and Sidhi in Madhya Pradesh, Azamgarh, Ayodhya, Bareilly, and Dehradun in Uttar Pradesh, and Mandi in Himachal Pradesh.

 

Under the influence of an offshore trough running from Maharashtra to north Kerala and the active monsoon trough, heavy to very heavy rainfall with instances of extremely heavy showers are likely over parts of Konkan and Goa from Thursday to Saturday, the weather department said.

 

Similar weather conditions are also likely over the Ghat areas of central Maharashtra on Thursday and Friday, over central Maharashtra as a whole on Saturday and Sunday, and over the Gujarat region on Friday and Saturday, the department said. The department has issued a red alert for all these regions for the given period. A red alert indicates rainfall exceeding 204.5 millimetres in 24 hours and is the highest level of weather warning. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over most parts of west India till Monday, the department said.

 

In central India, very heavy rainfall is seen in parts of Madhya Pradesh from Wednesday to Saturday, over Vidarbha from Wednesday to Friday, and over Chhattisgarh on Wednesday, the weather department said. Heavy rain is likely over several parts of central India till Monday, while moderate to intense lightning is expected over most of the region till Wednesday, the department said.

 

Very heavy rainfall is likely over parts of Gangetic West Bengal on Sunday and Monday, over Bihar till Wednesday, and over Odisha till Monday, the weather bureau said. Heavy rainfall is likely to persist over most parts of east India till Monday, and over northeast India till Saturday. An upper air cyclonic circulation lies over the north Bay of Bengal, which is likely to cause the formation of a low pressure area over the same region around Friday, the bureau said.

 

Very heavy showers are expected over parts of Kerala and south interior Karnataka till Wednesday, and over coastal Karnataka till Thursday, the weather bureau said. Strong surface winds are likely over parts of Karnataka till Monday, over Andhra Pradesh till Saturday, and over Telangana from Thursday to Saturday, the bureau said. Heavy showers are seen over most parts of south peninsula India till Monday.

 

The presence of the monsoon trough, along with multiple other weather systems, is likely to increase weather activities over northwest India in the next few days, the bureau said. Very heavy rainfall is likely over parts of Himachal Pradesh from Thursday to Saturday, over Uttarakhand on Wednesday and Thursday, and over Uttar Pradesh till Wednesday. Thundersqualls are seen over parts of Himachal Pradesh Friday to Sunday and over east Rajasthan Thursday to Monday. Heavy rainfall is expected over multiple parts of northwest India till Monday.

 

Hot and humid conditions are likely to prevail in pockets of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura from Thursday to Saturday, the bureau said.  End
