Monsoon revives in Mumbai, moderate to heavy rains seen till Sun-Mon - Skymet

MUMBAI – Following a delayed onset and a brief dry spell, the monsoon saw a revival over Mumbai and its suburbs, with the spread and intensity of rainfall increasing across the region. Moderate to heavy rainfall is likely to continue over Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, and all adjoining areas till at least Sunday or Monday, private weather forecasting agency Skymet said. A persistent cloud cover and continuous rainfall is likely to keep daytime temperatures in Mumbai below normal during this period, the weather agency said.
The southwest monsoon hit Mumbai on Jun. 23, 12 days after the normal onset date of Jun. 11, bringing with it the first spell of showers over the city. The Santacruz weather station recorded 225 millimetres of rainfall, while the Colaba station received 248 millimetres during the first spell of monsoon showers.
However, post the first monsoon showers, unfavourable weather conditions kept the city and its suburbs largely dry. Currently, the revival of the monsoon is driven by strengthening westerly winds and favourable atmospheric conditions along the western coast of the country, the weather agency said.
Typically, July and August are the most active monsoon months in Mumbai. During these months, the city typically records one or two instances of extremely heavy showers which lead to widespread flooding and severe traffic disruptions. Similar conditions are expected to develop around Sunday or Monday as a low-pressure area is expected to move from south Madhya Pradesh to north Konkan and Goa, influencing the weather in Mumbai and its suburbs.
During Jun. 1-29, the Colaba weather station recorded 441.1 millimetres of rainfall, while the Santacruz station recorded 416.4 millimetres. End
