MUMBAI – The iCOMDEX Composite index of the Multi Commodity Exchange of India moved lower in early trade Tuesday, pulled down by bullion and energy components. After opening nearly flat at 22227.80 points, it fell and was trading at 22081.46 points at 1052 IST, down 0.66% from its previous close.
The bullion index was down 0.84% at 32785.88 points as uncertainty continued about the US-Iran peace deal. US President Donald Trump claimed on Monday that Iran had "requested a meeting" following the exchange of strikes last week, and said it would take place in Qatar Tuesday, Al Jazeera reported. Iran's foreign ministry denied any planned meeting with the US, yet said it would send an expert delegation to Doha to follow up on the release of frozen Iranian funds. The spectre of inflation and rise in interest rates continued to haunt the bullion market, as the latter would lead to higher opportunity costs for gold investors. Gold prices were down 0.83% and silver rates down 0.59%.
The energy index was down 0.87% at 6690.63 points on expectations that a meeting between the US and Iran in Doha, Qatar, could further ease supply disruptions in West Asia. Crude oil was down 0.88%, while natural gas was down 0.49%.
The base metal component of iCOMDEX was marginally higher at 22303.61 points, up 0.02%. Aluminium, zinc and lead were trading a bit higher, while copper was lower than thier closing prices on Monday.
The MCX iCOMDEX comprises a series of real-time commodity futures price indices and tracks the performance of a basket of commodity futures. It serves as a benchmark for market movements in bullion, base metals, and energy. End
