MUMBAI – The area covered under kharif crops in Rajasthan progressed to 3.65 million hectares as of Thursday, down nearly 12% from 4.13 million hectares sown in the same period last year, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. Of the normal acreage for the season, which is 16.41 million hectares, more than 22% has been covered so far.

 

Paddy acreage rose to 35,422 hectares from 30,910 hectares a year ago, according to the data. The area sown under maize was down sharply at 67,624 hectares from 240,869 hectares a year ago, while that of bajra also fell to 1.10 million hectares from 1.45 million hectares a year ago. 

 

The area sown under moong was up at 571,153 hectares from 531,726 hectares last year, the report showed. The acreage under urad was 14,701 hectares from 13,824 hectares a year ago. The total area sown under all pulses in the state rose to 694,535 hectares from 654,800 hectares last year.

 

The acreage under all oilseeds so far was 602,924 hectares, down from 736,706 hectares sown in the previous year, according to the report. The area sown under groundnut was up at 561,580 hectares from 515,602 hectares a year ago, while that of soybean slipped to 31,121 hectares from 199,008 hectares last year.

 

Cotton acreage in the state fell to 481,112 hectares from 558,815 hectares a year ago, the report showed. The area sown under sugarcane was up at 3,769 hectares from 3,154 hectares last year, while that of guar, another major kharif crop in the state, rose to 374,326 hectares from 163,187 hectares a year ago.

 

Kharif crops are sown at the beginning of the Southwest monsoon season, which usually starts around mid-June, and are harvested in October. During Jun. 1-29, the state received 51.5 millimetres of rainfall, 2?ove normal for the period, according to the India Meteorological Department. The monsoon trough is yet to advance over Rajasthan, missing its normal onset date of Jun. 25, according to the weather department. However, active pre-monsoon conditions have made up for the shortfall in monsoon showers in the state so far.  End
