MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar in the key markets of Uttar Pradesh rose as demand increased due to concerns about lower sugar availability during July, traders said. Mills in Maharashtra kept prices steady after increasing them over the past few days, they said.

Mills in Uttar Pradesh raised prices by INR 30-INR 40 per 100 kg as there was speculative buying, said Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India. Prices have increased by about INR 100 per 100 kg after the release of the sales quota for July, as traders consider the quota to be insufficient to meet the demand next month.

The government has set the domestic sugar sales quota for July at 2.2 million tonnes. The quota for next month is 2.2% lower than the 2.25 million tonnes in June. Traders are stocking up the pipeline due to concern about lower availability next month, he said.

Mills in Maharashtra kept prices steady after increasing them by INR 10 per 100 kg the previous day as demand from the resale market was firm due to concern about lower availability of sugar next month, said Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association. Prices are likely to increase further in the coming days as well, Kuvadia said.

The following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:

--Up INR 30-INR 40 at INR 4,180-INR 4,270 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh

--Up INR 30-INR 40 at INR 4,190-INR 4,280 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh

--Up INR 10 at INR 4,120-INR 4,192 per 100 kg in Mumbai

--Up INR 10 at INR 3,995-INR 4,010 per 100 kg in Kolhapur

At 2026 IST, the price of sugar on the Intercontinental Exchange was up 0.2% at 13.45 cents per pound. Prices rose amid concern about lower global production linked to El Nino.  End
