NEW DELHI – The government has lifted the cap on the sale of bulk petrol and diesel at retail outlets after reviewing the currently prevailing supply situation, according to an order. The curbs imposed on Jun. 12 will be lifted starting Wednesday, the government order said.

The government had restricted institutional and commercial buyers from buying petrol and diesel from retail pumps. Retail outlets were also restricted from selling diesel in quantity above 200 litres per buyer and could dispense the fuel only into a vehicle tank or Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation-approved containers.

The curbs were introduced following diesel and petrol purchases by institutional and commercial users from retail outlets leading to abnormal increase in sales. Moreover, this had led to disparities between retail and bulk prices, fuel shortages at pumps, and disruptions to services for common citizens.

Prices of petrol and diesel for commercial sale are unregulated and are linked to international crude oil prices, which had surged around 60% after the war in West Asia broke out on Feb. 28. The prices, which are generally reviewed every fortnight, were increased accordingly. However, oil marketing companies had kept the prices of petrol and diesel for retail use unchanged until May 15. Even after the hike in retail fuel prices, the differential in commercial and retail fuel rates had pushed many bulk consumers to retail outlets.  End
