NEW DELHI – The Union Cabinet last week approved an additional investment of INR 300 billion in the National Investment and Infrastructure Fund to spur infrastructure investment and catalyse institutional capital into India, the Ministry of Finance said in a press release Monday. With this, the government's total commitment to the National Investment and Infrastructure Fund now stands at INR 600 billion.

National Investment and Infrastructure Fund is India's sovereign-anchored fund, professionally run and managed by National Investment and Infrastructure Fund Ltd. The government is a 49% shareholder in the National Investment and Infrastructure Fund, which currently manages capital commitments of approximately INR 400 billion across its funds and investment strategies.

The government's additional fund commitment is expected to accelerate investments across sectors, including transportation, energy, digital infrastructure, urban infrastructure, e-mobility and other nationally important projects, the release said. This investment commitment will be used for setting up the National Investment and Infrastructure Fund's second infrastructure-focused fund, which will be the successor to its first flagship fund with this mandate.

"NIIF Infrastructure Fund II is proposed to have a target corpus of close to Rs. 30,000 crore (INR 300 billion) and is expected to undertake investments across transportation, energy, digital infrastructure, and emerging areas such as urban infrastructure and e-mobility," the release said. "The allocation shall also support NIIF's new fund strategies and successor bilateral and other strategic funds." End
