MUMBAI – The area under kharif crops across India as of Thursday was down 23% from a year ago at 18.3 million hectares, according to data from the agriculture ministry. The acreage of paddy, most coarse cereals, pulses, oilseeds and cotton fell, according to the data.
The acreage of paddy as of Thursday was 2.58 million hectares, down from 3.44 million hectares a year ago, the data showed. Paddy is the largest crop in terms of both acreage and production sown during the kharif season.
The area under coarse cereals, promoted as 'Shri Anna' by the government, was down on year at 3.18 million hectares from 3.61 million hectares, according to the data. Under coarse cereals, the acreage of bajra fell to 1.13 million hectares from 1.31 million hectares a year ago. Maize acreage fell to 1.57 million hectares from 1.86 million hectares a year ago, but that of jowar rose to 338,000 hectares from 270,000 hectares.
The total area under all pulses as of Thursday across the country was 1.49 million hectares, down 31% from 2.15 million hectares a year ago, the data showed. Tur acreage fell on year to 356,000 hectares from 845,000 hectares. The area under urad fell to 107,000 hectares from 251,000 hectares last year, and that under moong fell to 837,000 hectares from 863,000 hectares.
The total area under all oilseeds as of Thursday was 1.70 million hectares, lower than 3.64 million hectares a year ago, according to the data. Under oilseeds, the acreage of groundnut fell on year to 887,000 hectares from 1.53 million hectares a year ago, while that of soybean was down on year at 692,000 hectares from nearly 2.0 million hectares. On other hand, sunflower acreage rose to 73,000 hectares from 44,000 hectares a year ago.
The area under sugarcane rose to 5.73 million hectares from 5.66 million hectares a year ago. Jute acreage was up at 625,000 hectares from 613,000 hectares a year ago. On the contrary, the acreage of cotton fell on year to 2.97 million hectares from 4.54 million hectares, the data showed.
