MUMBAI – Benchmark equity indices closed lower, snapping a two-day winning run, as market participants assessed the latest developments in the West Asia war amid growing caution over renewed hostilities in the region over the weekend. Crude oil prices inched up Monday but were still around $72–$73 per barrel levels as the US and Iran agreed to suspend military operations and resume high-level talks in Qatar Tuesday to resolve the dispute over the Strait of Hormuz. Investors also turned cautious ahead of the expiry of Nifty 50's monthly derivatives contract, according to technical analysts.
The Nifty 50 index settled at 23946.25, down 109.75 points or 0.5%. The BSE Sensex closed at 76728.37, down 372.10 points or 0.5%. After opening largely flat, the indices swung between gains and losses in the first half of the trading session before falling sharply in the second half. "Profit booking persisted near key psychological levels as investors remained cautious about the sustainability of the interim US–Iran peace agreement," Vinod Nair, head of research at Geojit Investments, said in a note. The India Volatility Index rose over 4% to 13.6100, after falling for two straight sessions, indicating increased nervousness in the market.
The 50-stock index fell below the 24000 points mark after two sessions. A decline in select information technology and automobile stocks, coupled with profit-taking in banking stocks, dragged down the Nifty 50 index, while gains in pharma and healthcare stocks limited the fall.
Broader market indices also witnessed selling pressure, with the small-cap indices falling the most, down 0.5-0.7%. All sectoral indices except Nifty Pharma, Nifty Healthcare, Nifty Metal, and Nifty Energy ended in the red, falling 0.1-2.1%. After rising in the previous session, most automobile stocks declined Monday, with the Nifty Auto index falling over 2% to 26417.60 points. These stocks fell amid worries that a weak monsoon could hurt demand for two-wheelers, entry-level cars and tractors, according to reports.
Shares of most IT stocks were under selling pressure Monday led by Persistent Systems, which slumped over 11% to its lowest closing price in two years. Shares of the company fell after brokerages maintained a cautious tone on the stock, citing integration and growth risks stemming from its proposed acquisition of German digital engineering firm Nagarro SE. The acquisition is expected to be revenue and margin-dilutive in the near term, according to multiple brokerages. It is also expected to double Persistent Systems' overall risk of artificial intelligence-led deflation, Nirmal Bang Institutional Equities said in a report.
Shares of Kotak Mahindra Bank fell over 3?ter Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Ashok Vaswani said he would not seek reappointment on completion of his tenure on Dec. 31. Vaswani's decision not to seek reappointment introduces leadership uncertainty at a time when Kotak Mahindra Bank is focused on accelerating growth and improving business momentum, ICICI Direct said in a report. "While the bank's fundamentals and capital position remain strong, we expect the stock's valuation to remain range-bound until there is greater clarity on the successor and the continuity of the bank's strategic direction," the brokerage said.
Astral shed 8% on Monday after announcing the demerger of its chemical business into a wholly owned subsidiary, Astral Chemie, which will be listed after receiving approvals from statutory and regulatory authorities. Its board also approved the amalgamation of Al-Aziz Plastics, a wholly owned subsidiary, with the parent company. Brokerage Equirius Securities believes that the demerger will create a near-term overhang on the stock's performance as investors try to gauge what multiples each individual business will command post listing.
Among gainers, shares of the pharmaceutical and healthcare sectors rose amid defensive buying and optimism around the launch pipeline, according to analysts. The Nifty Pharma and Nifty Healthcare gained around 1?ch. Shares of Dr. Reddy's Laboratories gained about 2?ter the US Food and Drug Administration completed an inspection at its Bachupally facility with seven observations, which the drugmaker said it would address within the stipulated timeline.
Shares of Turtlemint Fintech Solutions closed around 11% lower on its debut. The stock was listed at a 11.3% discount to its issue price of INR 152 on the National Stock Exchange. The financial technology company's initial public offering was subscribed 1.2 times, with bids for 39.55 million shares against 32.90 million shares on offer.
