US strikes Iran in response to attack on commercial ship in Strait of Hormuz

NEW DELHI – The US Friday conducted strikes against Iran in response to Tehran's drone attack on a commercial ship passing through the Strait of Hormuz, the US Central Command said in a release. A US aircraft hit Iranian missile and drone storage locations and coastal radar sites Friday, a day after Iran hit a Singapore-flagged cargo ship that was exiting the Strait of Hormuz.
"The unwarranted aggression against commercial shipping by Iranian forces clearly violated the ceasefire," the US Central Command said. "Furthermore, Iran's dangerous behavior undermined freedom of navigation as commerce increasingly flows through the vital international trade corridor."
The US and Iran had agreed on Jun. 17 to end hostilities and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, which had been effectively shut after the US and Israel attacked Tehran at the end of February. The shutdown of the waterway had pushed up energy prices globally.
According to several media reports, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps blamed the US for the fresh flare-up of hostilities. The Iranian navy reacted to the US strikes by hitting US military positions in the region, according to media reports citing the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
The US Central Command said its forces will continue to provide safe passage coordination and support to commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz. "The U.S. military remains present and vigilant to ensure all aspects of the agreement with Iran are adhered to, obeyed, and in full force and effect," the Central Command said. End
