Ghalibaf refutes US claim of Iran buying agri products with unfrozen money

NEW DELHI – Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, speaker of Iran's parliament the Majlis, Thursday refuted US claims that Iran will only be using its unfrozen money to buy agricultural products from the US, calling it "trash talks".
"America falsely claims our unfrozen assets will buy their agriculture (products). Interesting," Ghalibaf, who is also Iran's chief negotiator in the peace talks with the US, posted on social media platform X. "The only crop we are harvesting is what you planted: decades of mistrust. It's organic, abundant, and home-grown."
He added, "But apparently the US only exports genetically modified soybeans, broken promises and trash talks."
US President Donald Trump had Tuesday repeated the US position--earlier floated by Vice-President J.D. Vance during peace negotiations with the Iranian delegation in Switzerland--that Iran will use its unfrozen assets only to buy food and agricultural products from the US.
According to media reports, Iran's $12 billion of frozen funds held in various countries are slated to be released upfront as part of the memorandum of understanding reached between the two sides, which extends the ceasefire in West Asia for 60 days to negotiate terms to permanently end hostilities.
"The money the US Treasury is releasing, and the money earned through sanctions waiver, will be used for the purchase of food and medical supplies, exclusively from the United States, including corn, wheat, and soybeans from our great American farmers," Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform Tuesday.
This came after Israel expressed its reservation over the move to release Iran's frozen assets as well as the 60-day sanctions waiver on Iranian crude oil, saying the money would be used to fund Hezbollah militants in Lebanon.
Iran's Foreign Ministry Spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei, too, has said Tehran is "not faced with any restriction" on how to channel these funds. "Our assets will be employed with absolute liberty," he had said in response to a media query Tuesday. End
