NEW DELHI – Futures contracts of most spices closed higher on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange Thursday. Coriander prices rose slightly amid sustained demand and tight supplies. Turmeric prices rose as increased buying interest emerged at lower levels.

The most active August contract of CORIANDER rose 0.3% to INR 14,680 per 100 kilograms amid sustained demand. However, gains were limited amid subdued buying interest at higher price levels. "Demand at elevated levels is reportedly getting halted, keeping the prices under check," SMC Global Securities said. The contract had hit a record high of INR 15,130 on Tuesday.

The brokerage said Wednesday that the contract is likely to trade higher if it succeeds in sustaining above the INR 14,600 levels amid tight market supplies, improved demand from spice processors, and expectations of increased exports to West Asia. However, if buying tapers persistently at higher prices, coriander prices may correct to INR 14,515 levels, followed by INR 14,398, SMC Global said.

The most active July contract of JEERA declined 1.3% to INR 20,180 per 100 kg, extending losses for the third session amid sustained weak demand at prevailing rates and ample supplies. SMC Global sees the contract falling further to INR 20,148. However, the contract may inch higher amid expectations of improved exports to West Asia, absorbing higher domestic supplies, SMC Global said.

The most active August contract of TURMERIC rose nearly 2% to INR 16,686 per 100 kg, as buying interest improved at lower levels. The contract may trend downward again if it breaches the INR 16,475 floor and fall to INR 16,200, followed by INR 15,993 amid increased supply pressure. However, a pick-up in export demand may cap losses, it said.
