Mustard avg yields rise 20-30% under SEA's model farm plan across 3 states

NEW DELHI – The Solvent Extractors' Association of India's initiative 'Mustard Model Farm Programme' has achieved an average increase of 20-30% in yield of mustard in 3,000 fields across Rajasthan, Haryana, and Madhya Pradesh in the 2025-26 rabi season. Rajasthan emerged as the standout performer with impressive yields and improved benefit-cost ratio due to the adoption of better production practices.
"Can India cut its edible oil import bill? 30% mustard yield growth in Haryana and Rajasthan, just gave the answer!," SEA said in a release. India relies on imports to meet over 60% of its edible oil requirements.
State-wise, Rajasthan's average mustard yield rose to 2,409 kg per hectare from 1,853 kg per hectare across 1,320 fields, and Haryana's rose to 2,470 kg from 1,900 kg per hectare across 100 fields. Madhya Pradesh mustard yields rose 20.5% to 2,295 from 1,900 per hectare in 10 farms.
"The highest increase in B:C (benefit-cost) ratio was observed in Rajasthan (54%), followed by Haryana (37%) and Madhya Pradesh (24%)," SEA said. The overall gross income rose by up to INR 33,000 per hectare, significantly improving farmers' profitability amid reduced cultivation costs and efficient crop management, it added.
SEA urged the government to consider collaborating with the association to expand the programme's scalability and impact across the country. "It's good to see these results, as that's what we set out for when we started the Mustard Model Farm Program back in 2019. It's high time we take such an exemplary program to various corners and oilseeds wherever possible so that we can have higher growth domestically and realistically lesser dependence on imports," said SEA President Sanjeev Asthana, who is also the chief executive officer of Patanjali Foods Ltd.
The SEA is running the Mustard Model Farm Programme in partnership with Solidaridad Network Asia Ltd. Agribusiness majors such as Godrej Agrovet Ltd., AWL Agribusiness Ltd., Bunge India Pvt Ltd., Louis Dreyfus India Pvt Ltd., V.V.F. India Pvt Ltd., J.R. Agro Industries Ltd., and Arihant Solvex Pvt. Ltd. also support the programme. End
