MUMBAI – The benchmark Nifty 50 index rose past the 24200 points mark for the first time in over a month, supported by lower crude oil prices, but failed to sustain the gains and came off highs to settle at 24056 points on Thursday, as investors booked profits. While gains in automobile and select banking stocks supported the positive momentum, a sharp fall in most information technology and metal stocks arrested further gains in the index.
The Nifty 50 index settled at 24056, up 34.35 points or 0.1%. The BSE Sensex closed at 77100.47, up 109.25 points or 0.1%. Over the week, the indices lost 0.5% and 0.4% respectively. The broader market indices also failed to hold their intraday highs and ended in the red, underperforming their benchmark peers. The Nifty small-cap indices ended 0.4-0.5% lower and the Nifty midcap indices closed 0.5-0.6% down.
On Thursday, the August Brent crude futures contract on the Intercontinental Exchange fell over 2% intraday to $72.06 per barrel, its lowest level since the war in West Asia began. Oil prices fell as tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz picked up and supply that had been trapped inside the Persian Gulf for months began flowing again. With crude oil prices falling past pre-war levels, concerns over current account deficit and balance-of-payments deficits, which were threatening India's macro stability, have eased, bringing in the biggest relief for the market and "is the bullish thing that is pulling the market up," VK Vijayakumar, chief investment strategist at Geojit Investments, said.
In the latest development, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps warned ships transiting through the Strait of Hormuz against taking any route other than those "authorised" by it. Navigation outside the designated routes was "prohibited and highly dangerous", it said. The warning came a day after Oman, in coordination with the International Maritime Organization, provided an alternative corridor for ships.
Back in the domestic market, shares of most automobile companies ended higher, driven by softer metal prices, easing supply chain constraints, and improving retail demand during the month, Vinod Nair, head of research at Geojit Investments, said in a note. The overall bullish market sentiment, after crude oil prices eased to pre-war levels, also supported gains in these stocks. The Nifty Auto index gained over 2%, with most of its constituents ending in the green, up 0.2-4.9%.
Shares of aviation companies also saw strong buying interest Thursday, after crude oil prices fell to pre-war levels. InterGlobe Aviation gained around 5% on the National Stock Exchange and SpiceJet was up around 3% on BSE. The impact of higher crude oil prices on domestic aviation turbine fuel prices was largely offset by the government's INR 100 billion price stabilisation support. However, there were concerns that a prolonged war would lead to further fuel price hikes, an analyst covering the sector at a domestic brokerage said. With crude oil falling past pre-war levels, this fear has now eased, triggering an upmove in aviation stocks, the analyst added.
Among laggards, Shares of most metal companies declined after silver and aluminium prices fell sharply on the London Metal Exchange amid easing supply concerns and a strengthening dollar. Moreover, expectations of an interest rate hike by the US Federal Reserve also weighed on the metal prices. The Nifty Metal index shed over 1% to 12445.65 points, with most of its constituents ending in the red, down 0.3-4.7%.
Shares of Tata and Shapoorji Pallonji group companies were mixed amid ambiguity around the listing of Tata Sons. The Reserve Bank of India Wednesday finalised an INR-1-trillion asset size threshold to decide upper-layer non-banking financial companies, which raised hopes that it would lead to the listing of Tata Sons and unlock value for several Tata group stocks. At the same time, the RBI has removed the definition of 'indirect public funds' from the final rules, which is being seen as a relief for Tata Sons and may pave the road for the RBI to allow the company's request to be de-registered as a non-banking financial services company. Several Tata group stocks, including Tata Motors, Tata Chemicals, and Tata Capital, were up 2–5%. Shares of Shapoorji Pallonji group companies were largely lower, with Sterling and Wilson Renewable Energy and Gokak Textiles down 1% and 5% respectively.
