MUMBAI – Futures contracts of copper on the Multi Commodity Exchange of India rose Thursday, tracking a rise in contracts on the London Metal Exchange. Copper prices also rose due to supply risks. Copper stocks at Shanghai Futures Exchange warehouses declined 23.6% last week, while inventories in LME warehouses fell further to 352,150 tonnes, with a significant portion earmarked for withdrawal, Kedia Advisory said in a note.
At 1600 IST, the dollar index, which measures the greenback's strength against a basket of six major currencies, was down 0.1% at 101.38. A weaker dollar makes dollar-denominated commodities, such as base metals, cheaper for holders of other currencies, aiding demand.
However, the gains in the COPPER price are likely to be capped due to expectations of US Federal Reserve interest rate hikes this year. At its latest policy meeting, the Fed left rates unchanged but signalled growing support for tighter monetary policy, while Chair Kevin Warsh reiterated his commitment to restoring price stability. "Base metals trading is currently dominated by Fed monetary policy," Bloomberg reported, quoting Gao Ying, an analyst with Shuohe Asset Management Co., as saying. "There are hardly any speculative long positions in base metals at the moment."
Meanwhile, the surplus in the global refined copper market widened to 239,000 tonnes in the first four months of 2026 from 47,000 tonnes in the corresponding period last year, according to a report by the International Copper Study Group.
