MUMBAI – Prices of wheat and rice were unchanged, while those of maize showed mixed trends in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Maize prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, rose due to concern about production during the kharif season due to the El Nino impact, they said. Wheat prices could rise marginally in the near term due to festival demand, while rice prices are likely to rise in the near term if demand from West Asia revives, they said.

WHEAT prices in Indore were unchanged at INR 2,660 per 100 kg, said Gaurav Kochar, a local trader. Prices are unchanged amid the lack of new cues, he said. "Nothing much has changed from yesterday, demand and supply remain the same," he said. While there are some speculation of the Food Corp. of India setting the base price of wheat at INR 2,600 per 100 kg for the open-market sales schemes, there have been no official confirmations, keeping prices unchanged, he said. "If the government truly sets the base price as INR 2,600 per 100 kg then prices will rise, but these are only rumours till now, there is no notification from the Centre," he said.

In the medium term, prices of wheat could be supported marginally due to a rise in demand during the festival season, Kochar said. The use of wheat in sweets and snacks rises during the festival season, which begins from August, he said. However, a steep rise in prices is unlikely due to the ample availability of the grain, he said.

The price of wheat in Vashi, Navi Mumbai, was steady at INR 2,700 per 100 kg, said Devendra Vora, a wholesale trader. Prices were unchanged as demand for wheat matched its supply, he said.

MAIZE prices in Indore rose by INR 50 per 100 kg to INR 2,350 per 100 kg Thursday, Kochar said. Prices have risen for the second time this week due to rising concern about the kharif maize production, he said. The risk to monsoon in the form of deficient rainfall due to El Nino has raised crop stress concerns and prospects of potential supply disruptions, Kedia Adviosry said in a report. According to the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations, El Nino could reduce production of maize across South and Southeast Asia and increase food security pressure, the brokerage said. As of Monday, maize acreage in Maharashtra, one of the top producers of maize, dropped sharply to 30,428 hectares from 366,636 hectares a year ago, data from the state agriculture department showed.

Prices of maize in Davanagere, Karnataka, were steady at INR 1,800-INR 2,050 per 100 kg, said Shiva Kumar, a local trader. Arrivals were steady at 800 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), he said.

Prices of RICE varieties were steady in Vashi, Vora said. Prices of the 1409 and 1509 varieties of basmati rice were steady at INR 9,600-INR 9,700 per 100 kg and INR 8,200-INR 8,300 per 100 kg, respectively, he said. Prices of the 1121 variety of basmati rice were also steady at INR 10,000–INR 10,200 per 100 kg, he said. The market is monitoring the traffic moving through the Strait of Hormuz, as easing worries about the safety of ships through the key waterway is likely to revive demand from countries in West Asia, which are the top destinations of Indian basmati rice exports.  End
