MUMBAI – The presence of the active monsoon trough, multiple upper air cyclonic circulations, and a seasonal trough are likely to cause intense rainfall over parts of east and northeast India over the next few days, the India Meteorological Department said. The weather department has issued a red alert for very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall over parts of sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim from Saturday to Monday. Similar weather conditions are also likely over Assam and Meghalaya on Sunday, the department said.
A red alert indicates rainfall exceeding 204.5 millimetres in 24 hours and is the highest level of weather warning.
Very heavy rainfall is also likely over parts of sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim till Friday and on Sunday, while heavy rainfall is expected to persist over most parts of east India till Wednesday, the weather bureau said. Thundersqualls are expected over parts of Bihar Friday and Sunday, the bureau said.
Very heavy rainfall is also expected over Arunachal Pradesh from Saturday to Monday and over Assam and Meghalaya on Saturday and from Monday to Wednesday, the bureau said. Heavy showers, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are likely to persist in many parts of northeast India till Wednesday.
The southwest monsoon trough remains in the same position as it was on Wednesday, passing through Surat in Gujarat, Indore and Mandla in Madhya Pradesh, Daltonganj in Jharkhand, and Motihari in Bihar, the department said. Conditions are favourable for the monsoon trough to advance further over more parts of Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh, the remaining parts of Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and Bihar, and some parts of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand in the next three to four days.
The intensity and spread of rainfall are expected to increase over south peninsula India, the weather bureau said. Very heavy rainfall is likely over parts of Kerala on Monday, coastal Karnataka from Monday to Wednesday, and over south interior Karnataka on Monday and Tuesday. Heavy rainfall is likely to continue over most parts of the region, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds till Wednesday, the bureau said. Strong surface winds are expected over Karnataka till Friday.
In west India, heavy showers with thunderstorms and lightning are likely over parts of Konkan and Goa from Friday to Wednesday and central Maharashtra from Friday to Monday, the weather bureau said. In central India, similar weather is expected over parts of Vidarbha and Chhattisgarh during the weekend, the bureau said. Thundersqualls are likely over parts of west Madhya Pradesh till Friday.
Under the influence of multiple weather systems, including a western disturbance, heavy rainfall is likely over parts of Himachal Pradesh on Tuesday and Wednesday, and Uttarakhand from Monday to Wednesday, the weather department said. Thundersqualls are expected over parts of west Rajasthan till Friday. Thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are likely to continue over several parts of northwest India till Wednesday.
Heatwave conditions are expected in pockets of Jharkhand till Friday, and over east Uttar Pradesh till Sunday. Severe heatwaves are also seen in some parts of east Uttar Pradesh till Saturday, the weather bureau said. End
