MUMBAI – Farmers in Andhra Pradesh have sown kharif crops across 295,000 hectares as of Wednesday, up 102% from 146,000 hectares a year ago, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. Of the normal acreage of 3.1 million hectares for the season, nearly 10% has been covered so far.

 

The acreage of paddy rose to 93,000 hectares from 61,000 hectares a year ago, according to the report. Maize acreage slipped to 11,000 hectares from 12,000 hectares, and that of bajra was down at 3,000 hectares from 5,000 hectares a year ago.

 

The area under tur was up at 17,000 hectares from 7,000 hectares a year ago, the report showed. The area under urad rose to 4,000 hectares from 2,000 hectares. Sowing of moong is yet to begin in the state. The total acreage of pulses was 22,000 hectares, up from 10,000 hectares a year ago.

 

The total area under all oilseeds so far in the season rose to 25,000 hectares from 17,000 hectares a year ago, according to the report. Groundnut acreage was up at 19,000 hectares from 14,000 hectares, while the area under soybean stood at 1,000 hectares, against nil a year ago.

 

The area under cotton was up at 135,000 hectares from 39,000 hectares a year ago, the report showed. Sugarcane acreage rose to 7,000 hectares from 3,000 hectares.

 

Kharif crops are sown at the beginning of the southwest monsoon season around June and harvested around October. During Jun. 1-24, Andhra Pradesh recorded 71.8 millimetres of rainfall, 5?low the normal of 75.6 millimetres, according to data from the India Meteorological Department. The monsoon trough covered Andhra Pradesh entirely on Jun. 12, but the strength of the monsoon trough remains weak, leading to below-normal rainfall over the state so far. 

 

As of Friday, water levels in reservoirs across Andhra Pradesh were at 39.5% of their live storage capacity, down from 45.2% a year ago, data from the state's water resources department showed.  End
