MUMBAI – Sowing of kharif crops commenced in Telangana, with 1.48 million acres (1 acre = 0.4 hectares) sown as of Wednesday, down nearly 48% from 2.84 million acres a year ago, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. The normal for the season is 13.24 million acres, of which more than 11% has been covered so far.

 

The area under paddy was down at 30,243 acres from 80,021 acres a year ago, the report showed. Maize acreage in the state fell steeply to 30,932 acres from 104,281 acres.

 

Tur acreage declined to 55,500 acres from 128,253 acres a year ago, according to the report. The area under moong was down at 8,737 acres from 10,445 acres, while that under urad rose to 3,801 acres from 1,915 acres a year ago. The total acreage under all pulses fell to 69,063 acres from 140,630 acres.

 

The total area under all oilseeds so far was 25,429 acres, down from 143,396 acres a year ago, the report showed. Soybean acreage fell to 24,666 acres from 143,253 acres, while the area under groundnut was up at 678 acres from 52 acres.

 

Cotton acreage in the state fell to 1.26 acres from 2.21 acres a year ago, the report showed. The area under sugarcane so far was 19,523 acres, while it was yet to be sown a year ago.

 

During Jun. 1–24, Telangana recorded 84.6 millimetres of rainfall, 17?low normal for the period, the data showed. The water level in reservoirs across Telangana was 402.40 thousand million cubic metres, as of Wednesday, compared with 345.54 thousand million cubic metres a year ago, the report said.

 

The southwest monsoon advanced over Telangana in the second week of June, and had covered the entire state by Jun. 23, 15 days post the normal onset date. The state has recorded deficient rainfall so far during the third week of June, which has resulted in lower than expected acreage for various crops. "In response, the Agriculture Department has taken concrete measures to ensure timely availability of all types of seeds at the disposal of the farmers to mitigate the impact and support continued sowing activities," the report said.  End
