MUMBAI – The iCOMDEX Composite index of the Multi Commodity Exchange of India rose in early trade Thursday after opening flat from Wednesday's close. The index opened at 21945.15 points, against Wednesday's close of 21944.71 points. At 1113 IST, the Composite index was trading 0.13% higher at 21973.94 points.

Among the components of the Composite index, the bullion index was moving between gains and losses in volatile trade. Gold prices on the MCX rose Thursday, tracking global prices. Prices rose due to improved market sentiment as crude oil prices fell sharply, and touched pre-war levels, with more ships transiting through the Strait of Hormuz. US Energy Secretary Chris Wright Wednesday said some 20 million barrels of crude oil have exited the strait in the last 24 hours. At 1115 IST, the bullion index traded 0.4% higher, as gold rose 0.4% and silver 0.8% from the previous day's closing.

The energy index was down 1%, with crude oil trading 1.2% lower and natural gas down 0.1%. The base metal index rose 0.7%, with copper up 0.9% and zinc up 0.6%. Aluminium was trading 0.4% higher and lead was up 0.1%.

The MCX iCOMDEX comprises a series of real-time commodity futures price indices and tracks the performance of a basket of commodity futures. It serves as a benchmark for market movements in bullion, base metals, and energy.  End
