MUMBAI – The government has set the domestic sugar sales quota for July at 2.2 million tonnes, the Department of Food and Public Distribution said in a post on social media platform X. The quota for next month is 2.2% lower than the 2.25 million tonnes in June but unchanged from July last year.
Traders had anticipated the quota to be the same as last year. There is firm demand for the sweetener from the resale market at the moment as the quota for July is low and there is concern of lower availability, traders said.
The government fixes the maximum quantity of sugar available for sale every month to support prices and help mills clear the arrears of sugarcane farmers. It also sets monthly sales quotas for each sugar mill.
The Indian Sugar & Bio-energy Manufacturers Association has cut its estimate on gross sugar production in 2025-26 to 32.0 million tonnes from 32.4 million tonnes estimated earlier in February. Sugar season runs from October to September and gross sugar output is estimated before the diversion of sucrose or sugar for ethanol production. End
