MUMBAI – The southwest monsoon trough is likely to advance over Delhi on Jul. 5, with an error margin of plus or minus three days, overshooting the normal onset date of Jun. 27 by eight days, private weather forecasting agency Skymet said. This will mark the first delay of monsoon onset over Delhi in four years, the weather agency said.

 

Multiple small-scale cyclonic circulations currently lie over the northern plains of the country. A low-level circulation lies over Haryana, collocated with another circulation over Punjab. The trough joining these systems is also connected with another low-level circulation over northwest India. This trough line is passing over the northern parts of Delhi, and its proximity is creating favourable conditions for light and scattered rainfall over and around Delhi in the next two days, particularly across the northern parts of the city, the weather agency said.

 

Moderately strong surface winds and minimal cloud cover over Delhi is likely to push daytime temperatures in the city higher, the weather agency said. The maximum temperature is expected to be around 41 degrees Celsius in the next two days.

 

Pre-monsoon showers over Delhi are likely to remain light and short-lived in the next two days, and rainfall accumulation is likely to stay below 5 millimetres, the weather agency said. During Jun. 1–23, the city received 26.9 millimetres of rain, 31?low the normal for the period, data from the India Meteorological Department showed.  End
