MUMBAI – The area under kharif crops in Rajasthan was at 3.278 million hectares as of Monday, down marginally from 3.284 million hectares a year ago, according to a report released by the state agriculture government. The state's normal kharif area, which is the average of the last five years, is 16.41 million hectares, of which nearly 20% has been covered so far.

 

The area under paddy rose to 31,353 hectares from 25,688 hectares a year ago, the report showed. The area under maize was down at 50,452 hectares from 190,673 hectares, and that under bajra fell to 984,331 hectares from 1.06 million hectares. 

 

The area under moong was up at 493,779 hectares from 403,565 hectares a year ago, according to the report. Urad acreage slipped to 8,876 hectares from 8,936 hectares. The total area under all pulses was 598,758 hectares, up from 484,178 hectares a year ago.

 

The total area under all oilseeds so far fell to 559,200 hectares from 659,270 hectares a year ago, the report showed. Groundnut acreage was up at 537,031 hectares from 462,385 hectares, and soybean acreage fell to 14,352 hectares from 179,040 hectares.

 

The area under cotton in the state was down at 479,091 hectares from 550,289 hectares a year ago, according to the report. Sugarcane acreage rose to 3,769 hectares from 3,085 hectares. The area under guar, another major kharif crop in the state, was up at 312,321 hectares from 132,858 hectares a year ago.

 

Kharif crops are sown at the beginning of the southwest monsoon season, which usually starts around mid-June, and are harvested in October. During Jun. 1-23, the state received 40.7 millimetres of rainfall, 26?ove the normal of 405.7 millimetres, according to the India Meteorological Department. Though the monsoon is yet to advance over Rajasthan, active pre-monsoon conditions led to ample rainfall over the state.  End
