MUMBAI – The iCOMDEX Composite index of the Multi Commodity Exchange of India traded lower Wednesday, dragged down by a fall in all the three component indices. The index opened at 22807.04 points, lower than Tuesday's close of 22916.55 points. At 1059 IST, the index was down 1.3% at 22668.70 points.
Among the three components of the Composite index, the bullion index traded 1.5% lower, as gold declined 1.1% and silver 3% from the previous day's closing. Bullion prices fell amid rising bets on US interest rate hikes, while investors assessed conflicting signals on the US-Iran peace talks. US President Donald Trump said Tuesday that Iran had agreed to nuclear inspections into "infinity" while Tehran said it had made no such concession in negotiations, raising questions about the viability of their fragile peace deal, Reuters reported.
The two sides also disagreed on the details of a provision that would allow Iran access to funds frozen in overseas accounts.
The energy index was down 0.6% with crude oil trading 0.6% lower and natural gas down 0.1%. The base metal index fell 0.9%, with copper down 1.1% and zinc down 0.6%. Aluminium was trading 1% lower and lead was down 0.9%.
The MCX iCOMDEX comprises a series of real-time commodity futures price indices and tracks the performance of a basket of commodity futures. It serves as a benchmark for market movements in bullion, base metals, and energy. End
