India May crude steel output up 2% on year, says World Steel Association

MUMBAI – Production of crude steel in India rose nearly 2% on year to 14.1 million tonnes in May, according to data from the World Steel Association. India accounted for nearly 9% of global steel output during the month. Global crude steel output fell 0.3% on year in May to 157.9 million tonnes.
Among the top 10 steel producers, India, the US, South Korea, Japan, Turkey, Brazil, Germany and Vietnam reported a year-on-year increase in output, while China and Russia reported a fall. China, the world's largest steel producer, reported an output of 84.4 million tonnes in May, down around 3% on year.
Production in Russia is estimated to have fallen over 5% to 5.6 million tonnes. In Japan, crude steel output was 7 million tonnes last month, up nearly 2% on year. The US produced 7.5 million tonnes of steel in May, up over 9% on year. Steel production in Turkey was up nearly 9% on year at 3.4 million tonnes. Crude steel production in Germany was up over 7% on year at 3.2 million tonnes in May. Crude steel production in Brazil rose over 2% on year to 2.8 million tonnes and production in Vietnam was up over 27% on year at 2.6 million tonnes.
The data reflect crude steel production in 69 countries reporting to the World Steel Association, and accounted for nearly 98% of world crude steel production in 2025. End
