MUMBAI – The southwest monsoon Tuesday advanced over more parts of Maharashtra, including Mumbai, setting in over the city 12 days after the normal date of Jun. 11, the India Meteorological Department said. The presence of the active monsoon trough and an upper cyclonic circulation over Lakshadweep are likely to cause very heavy rainfall over parts of Konkan and Goa from Wednesday to Friday, and over coastal Karnataka till Friday, the weather department said. The monsoon trough is also expected to cause heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds over several parts of west India till Monday.

 

The monsoon trough also covered the remaining parts of Telangana and Odisha, some more parts of Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and Bihar on Tuesday, the weather department said. Currently, the trough passes through Dahanu and Wardha in Maharashtra, Raipur in Chhattisagarh, Daltonganj in Jharkhand, and Motihari in Bihar. Conditions are favourable for the further advancement of the trough to over more parts of Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh and some parts of Madhya Pradesh in the next two to three days. Conditions also favour the further movement of monsoon over the remaining parts of Jharkhand and Bihar and some parts of Uttar Pradesh in three to four days, the department said.

 

The intensity and spread of rainfall are likely to increase over south peninsula India as heavy rainfall is expected over most of the region till Monday, the weather bureau said. Thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are also likely over these parts during this period, the bureau said.

 

Very heavy rainfall is likely to persist over parts of sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim from Thursday to Monday, while heavy showers are expected over parts of Bihar from Thursday to Monday and over Odisha till Saturday, the bureau said. Thundersquall is expected over Bihar on Thursday and Friday, and thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are likely over multiple parts of east India till Monday. In northeast India, heavy rainfall with thundertorm, lightning, and gusty winds are expected over most parts till Monday, while very heavy showers are seen over parts of Assam and Meghalaya on Friday and Saturday.

 

A wet spell accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are expected over parts of Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Vidarbha till Saturday, the weather department said.

 

Under the influence of multiple weather systems, widespread rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are likely over several parts of northwest India till Monday, the department said.

 

Heatwave conditions are expected over parts of Bihar and southeast Madhya Pradesh till Wednesday, east Uttar Pradesh till Saturday, and Vidarbha till Thursday, the department said. Warm night conditions are likely in pockets of Jharkhand on Wednesday and Thursday.  End
