Global body says production of primary aluminium up 4% on month in May

MUMBAI – Global production of primary aluminium rose nearly 4% month-on-month to 6.2 million tonnes in May, according to data from the International Aluminium Institute. On a year-on-year basis, production declined nearly 2%.
The average daily global aluminium production in May rose to 198,400 tonnes from 198,000 tonnes in April. China's aluminium production rose over 3% on month to 3.83 million tonnes in May, up nearly 2% on year, the data showed.
In Asia, excluding China, production rose to 420,000 tonnes in May from 407,000 tonnes a month earlier. In Africa, aluminium output was 93,000 tonnes in May, up from 91,000 tonnes the previous month. In Gulf Cooperation Council countries, production rose by 8,000 tonnes to 338,000 tonnes in May.
Production of primary aluminium in Europe, including Russia, rose to 631,000 tonnes in May from 604,000 tonnes the previous month. Output of the metal in North America rose by 13,000 tonnes to 335,000 tonnes in May, while production in South America rose by 5,000 tonnes to 132,000 tonnes.
Global alumina production fell nearly 6% on month to 11.92 million tonnes in April, according to the data. At 1244 IST, the three-month aluminium futures contract on the London Metal Exchange was at $3,255.00 per tonne, down 3.2% from the previous close. End
