Gujarat kharif acreage down 58% on year at 766,669 ha as of Mon

MUMBAI – The area under kharif crops in Gujarat was at 766,669 hectares as of Monday, down more than 58% from 1.83 million hectares a year ago, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. Of the normal acreage of 8.53 million hectares for the season, nearly 9% has been covered so far.
The acreage of paddy rose to 7,919 hectares from 1,090 hectares a year ago, the report showed. Maize acreage was up at 1,424 hectares from 663 hectares, while the area under bajra fell to 545 hectares from 1,935 hectares.
Tur acreage in the state slipped to 2,014 hectares from 3,178 hectares a year ago, according to the data. The area under moong was down at 173 hectares from 635 hectares, and that under urad fell to 43 hectares from 288 hectares a year ago. The total area under all pulses was 2,244 hectares, down from 4,145 hectares a year ago.
The total area under all oilseeds was 242,175 hectares, down sharply from 957,325 hectares a year ago, the data showed. Groundnut acreage fell to 238,912 hectares from 906,019 hectares. The acreage of soybean was down at 2,118 hectares from 50,623 hectares.
Cotton acreage in the state fell to 437,601 hectares from 757,842 hectares a year ago, the report showed. The area under vegetables slipped to 29,099 hectares from 38,231 hectares a year ago.
Kharif crops are sown at the beginning of the southwest monsoon season around June and harvested around October. During Jun. 1–22, Gujarat recorded 15 millimetres of rainfall, 75% below the normal for the period, according to data from the India Meteorological Department. The southwest monsoon is yet to advance over Gujarat as of Tuesday, a delay of eight days from the normal monsoon onset date of Jun. 15. End
