Monsoon expected to hit Mumbai Tue, extreme onset rainfall unlikely - Skymet

MUMBAI – The intensity and spread of rainfall is likely to increase over Mumbai as the southwest monsoon is likely to advance over the city around Tuesday, private weather forecasting agency Skymet said. However, Mumbai is unlikely to witness the typical deluge seen during the monsoon onset, as rainfall is likely to be moderate, with a few isolated heavy spells across the city, the weather agency said.
The onset of monsoon over Mumbai has been delayed by 12 days from its normal date of Jun. 11. The Santacruz weather station has recorded only 32.3 millimetres of rainfall till Monday, which is far below the normal for this time of the season, the weather agency said. Mumbai recorded its first spell of moderate showers on Jun. 1, measuring 13 millimetres, while the second spell arrived on Jun. 21, with 19 millimetres of rain. Between these spells, rainfall remained largely absent across the city, the agency said.
Currently, weather conditions are favourable for the advancement of the monsoon trough over Mumbai around Tuesday, and rainfall is also likely to increase over Konkan, Goa, and other parts of the country's west coast. However, rainfall is likely to remain moderate, and for the rest of June, the city could receive fairly consistent showers with the occasional heavy spell.
East and central parts of the country may have to wait longer for widespread monsoon rainfall, as the advancement of the monsoon trough is expected to stay relatively slow over these regions, the weather agency said. India's rainfall deficiency has climbed to around 42% in June so far, the agency said. End
