India kharif acreage up 1.7% on year at 11.99 mln ha as of Fri

MUMBAI – The area under kharif crops across India as of Friday was up 1.7% from a year ago at 11.99 million hectares, according to data from the agriculture ministry. The acreage of paddy and most coarse cereals rose year-on-year, while that of pulses, oilseeds and cotton fell, according to the data.
The acreage of paddy as of Friday was 1.24 million hectares, up 52.8% from 809,000 hectares a year ago, the data showed. Paddy is the largest crop in terms of both acreage and production sown during the kharif season.
The area under coarse cereals, promoted as 'Shri Anna' by the government, was up 26.6% on year at 1.24 hectares, according to the data. Under coarse cereals, the acreage of bajra jumped to 405,000 hectares from 214,000 hectares a year ago. Maize acreage rose to 569,000 hectares from 534,000 hectares a year ago, and that of jowar rose to 174,000 hectares from 140,000 hectares.
The total area under all pulses so far across the country was 721,000 hectares, rising 12.8% from 639,000 hectares a year ago, the data showed. Tur acreage rose 1.3% on year to 161,000 hectares. The area under urad fell to 62,000 hectares from 98,000 hectares last year, while that under moong rose to 408,000 hectares from 286,000 hectares.
The total area under all oilseeds as of Friday was 724,000 hectares, lower than 811,000 hectares a year ago, according to the data. Under oilseeds, the acreage of groundnut rose 3% on year to 525,000 hectares, while that of soybean was down 48% on year at 130,000 hectares. On the other hand, sunflower acreage rose to 49,000 hectares from 27,000 hectares a year ago.
The area under sugarcane rose to 5.73 million hectares from 5.66 million hectares a year ago. Jute acreage was up to 622,000 hectares from 609,000 hectares a year ago. On the contrary, the acreage of cotton fell 25% on year to 1.71 million hectares, the data showed.
