MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar in the key markets of Uttar Pradesh rose as mills were not in a hurry to meet sales quota at the moment, traders said. Prices rose in Maharashtra as demand improved slightly from ice-cream and cold-drink manufacturers due to high temperatures, they said.
Mills in Uttar Pradesh raised prices by INR 5–INR 10 per 100 kg as mills were not in a hurry to meet the monthly sales quota, said Naresh Gupta, a trader from North India. Traders in the resale market also raised prices by INR 5-INR 10 per 100 kg, he said.
Moreover, there is expectation that demand will rise from bulk consumers such as ice-cream and cold-drink manufacturers, Gupta said. But at higher prices, demand was as per requirement, Gupta said.
Mills in Maharashtra raised prices by INR 10 per 100 kg as demand has improved due to high temperatures in the state, Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association, said. There is demand from ice-cream and cold-drink manufacturers, he said.
However, on Monday, the monsoon trough advanced over several parts of Maharashtra, which could help in cooling down the temperatures, and sugar prices could be range-bound in the coming days, Kuvadia added.
The following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:
--Up INR 5-INR 10 at INR 4,030-INR 4,170 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh
--Up INR 5-INR 10 at INR 4,035 INR 4,185 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh
--Up INR 10 at INR 4,092-INR 4,182 per 100 kg in Mumbai
--Up INR 10 at INR 3,975-INR 3,990 per 100 kg in Kolhapur
At 1822 IST, the price of sugar on the Intercontinental Exchange was down 0.7% at 13.50 cents per pound, tracking a fall in crude oil prices on NYMEX. Lower crude oil prices reduce the incentive to divert sucrose for ethanol production, increasing the availability of sugar in the market. End
US$1 = INR 94.68
