NEW DELHI – Futures contracts of most spices on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange were up Monday. The coriander contract extended its rise and hit a new record high, surpassing the INR 15,000 level amid firm domestic demand and expectations of increased exports to West Asia. The turmeric contract fell slightly, weighed down by high supplies and subdued domestic demand.

At 1605 IST, the most active August contract of CORIANDER was at INR 15,030 per 100 kilograms, up 2% from the previous close. The contract hit a fresh record high of INR 15,128 earlier in the day. The aromatic spice has been logging fresh highs since Thursday amid firm domestic demand and expectations of a rise in exports.

Market participants are optimistic that easing geopolitical tensions in West Asia could gradually improve export demand from key importing countries. SMC Global Securities sees the contract inching higher to INR 15,096, as it crossed the initial ceiling of INR 14,909.

The most active July contract of JEERA was up 0.4% at INR 21,040 per 100 kg, driven by steady buying from domestic spice manufacturers amid improving export sentiment. "Although arrivals in major mandis surged by 91% to 11,291 tonnes, strong domestic offtake and hopes of normalization in export inquiries are likely to keep prices supported in the near term," SMC Global said. The brokerage expects the contract to rise further to INR 21,208 if it breaches the immediate resistance of INR 21,086.

The most active August contract of TURMERIC was down 0.6% at INR 16,756 per 100 kg, under pressure from higher arrivals. However, improving export sentiment and expectation of improved domestic demand at lower prices are likely to support prices for the next few days, SMC Global said.

"Average weekly arrivals across major APMC (agriculture produce market committee) mandis surged 249% week-on-week to 10,747 tonnes," the brokerage said. Although arrivals continue to remain significantly higher, prospects of stronger export demand and steady domestic buying are expected to absorb available supplies and keep prices well supported in the near term, it added.

SMC Global sees the contract declining to INR 16,629 if the INR 16,748 floor is broken. The brokerage expects the contract to pivot up only around INR 16,949 and move higher to INR 17,068 levels, followed by INR 17,269.
