MUMBAI – Prices of chana fell, while prices of tur and moong were steady in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Chana prices fell due to sluggish demand, as consumption remained low amid a delayed monsoon, they said. Tur prices are expected to take cues from the progress in monsoon and kharif sowing in the near term, while moong prices could rise due to a delay in sowing, they said.

 

CHANA prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, fell by INR 50 per 100 kilograms to INR 5,975-INR 6,000 per 100 kg Monday, said Kailash Kakani, a local trader. Demand for chana remained muted, weighing down on prices, he said. Typically, demand for chana rises in the second half of June as consumption of processed chana and chana flour increases after the monsoon sets in over the country, he said. With a delay in the monsoon onset this year, demand for chana remains tepid, he said. "Market sentiment is low because there is no sign of a rise in demand, as the temperature is still high in many parts of the country," he said.

 

While arrivals of the rabi crop have also declined, it has outpaced the decline in demand, Kakani said. "We still have some arrivals in the market, and even that is not being sold," he said.

 

Prices of chana in Delhi fell by INR 25 per 100 kg to INR 5,875 per 100 kg, traders said.

 

TUR prices in Solapur, Maharashtra, were steady at INR 7,400-INR 8,000 per 100 kg, said Mukesh Sanklecha, a local trader. About 15–16 trucks with 20,000-25,000 kg of tur each arrived in the market, he said. Prices have been fluctuating by INR 50-INR 100 per 100 kg in the past few days, depending on demand from millers and traders, as well as concerns about the weather, he said. Demand for tur remains need-based while arrivals of the crop are steady, keeping prices mostly unchanged, he said.

 

Prices are also taking cues from monsoon progress, which has been delayed across the country, Sanklecha said. "A few days ago, prices had risen because there were fears that the monsoon would take more time to reach Maharashtra and delay sowing further... Now, reports suggest rainfall will start in the state soon," he said. The monsoon had remained stationary over the southernmost parts of Maharashtra since Jun. 8, but on Monday, it advanced to more parts of the state, according to the India Meteorological Department. "In the near term, prices will mostly depend on the rainfall," he said. Tur sowing is yet to begin in full swing in Maharashtra, which is among the top producers of tur in the country. 

 

Prices of tur in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 8,200-INR 8,300 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.

 

MOONG prices in Jaipur, Rajasthan, were steady at INR 6,300-INR 6,700 per 100 kg Monday, according to the association. Prices are unchanged, as demand and supply of moong are both low and matched, he said. Arrivals of the summer crop have stopped across the country, but demand remains sluggish, keeping prices steady, he said. In the near term, prices could rise as sowing of kharif moong has been delayed due to a delayed onset of the monsoon, he said. Similar to tur, farmers are struggling to sow moong due to inadequate rainfall, he said.  End
