MUMBAI – After a decline driven by technology stocks on Friday, benchmark equity indices rebounded Monday and closed higher as the ongoing US-Iran peace talks lent positive sentiment to the market. A nearly 2?ll in crude oil prices to $79 a barrel also supported the equity market. The Nifty 50 index closed above 24000 level for the fourth straight session Monday.

Iran's top negotiators left Switzerland after 18 hours of intensive talks, and technical talks will continue there this week, according to mediators Qatar and Pakistan, Al Jazeera reported. Mediators said the US and Iran made "encouraging progress" on the first day of high-level talks and agreed on "a roadmap for a final deal to be reached within 60 days," as per the report.

On Sunday, US President Donald Trump threatened Iran with strikes if it did not stop Hezbollah amid continued clashes with Israel in Lebanon. However, as per the latest developments from the peace deal talks, the countries agreed to create a "de-confliction cell," facilitated by the mediators, to ensure the end of military operations in Lebanon, while Israel is considering announcing "symbolic" withdrawals from minor areas in southern Lebanon as part of upcoming talks.

Monday, the Nifty 50 settled at 24102.90, up 89.80 points or 0.4% higher. The BSE Sensex closed at 77094.07, up 291.17 points or 0.4% higher. "Indian equities traded with a positive bias during the first half of the session despite lingering geopolitical concerns following Israel's reported attack on Lebanon and the fragile situation in the Middle East (West Asia)," said Sundar Kewat, technical and derivatives analyst at Ashika Institutional Equity Research.

Broader market indices stood higher throughout the session and the Nifty smallcap 250 fared slightly better than the benchmark peers. The Nifty smallcap 250 ended nearly 1% higher, while the smallcap 100 and smallcap 50 closed 0.5-0.6% higher. Midcap indices settled 0.3–0.4% higher.

The Nifty FMCG and Nifty Consumer Durables declined among the sectoral indices. The Nifty Media led the pack of gainers, up over 1%. The Nifty Pharma and Nifty Healthcare were the other sectoral indices that settled around 1% higher each.

Cipla gained the most in the Nifty 50 index and rose almost 5%. Dr.Reddy's Laboratories and Sun Pharmaceutical Industries were the other pharmaceutical stocks, gaining around 2?ch. Information technology stocks such as Tech Mahindra and Infosys gained 1.3–1.8%. The Nifty IT index was among the major gainers, up nearly 1%, with most constituents ending higher.

The Nifty Oil & Gas also rose around 1% among the sectoral indices. Barring Oil and Natural Gas Corp. and Petronet LNG, all members of the Oil & Gas index were higher. Index heavyweight Reliance Industries rose over 1% in the Nifty 50. Its heavyweight peers, HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank, rose 0.4-0.9%.

In the Nifty 200 universe as well, pharmaceutical stocks gained the most. Mankind Pharma ended as the top gainer in the Nifty 200, up over 5%. Cipla was the second-biggest gainer in the index. Aditya Birla Capital and REC gained around 4?ch.

Kirloskar Oil Engines rose the most in the Nifty 500 index after hitting a 20% upper circuit. Shares of the company rose after it secured an order from digital infrastructure company HyperNext for 96 power systems for data centres. Triveni Turbine gained nearly 10% in the index.

Garden Reach Shipbuilders ended over 2% higher in the Nifty 500 index after the Department of Public Enterprises upgraded its status to 'Navratna' from 'Miniratna Category-I'. Shares of Delhivery ended 5% in the index and was up for the fourth straight session.

Asian Paints, Titan Co., Nestle, and Shriram Finance were the major laggards in the Nifty 50 index. The stocks ended 0.9-2.2% lower. Varun Beverages and Tata Capital fell the most among the Nifty 200 stocks, down around 3?ch, while Aadhar Housing Finance lost around 4% in the Nifty 500 index.
