MUMBAI – Both branches of the southwest monsoon trough advanced further over more parts of India on Monday, with the western branch breaking a two-week stall and the eastern one moving after staying stationary for the past 10 days, the India Meteorological Department said. Conditions are favourable for the trough to move over more parts of Maharashtra, including Mumbai, the remaining parts of Telangana and Odisha, and some more parts of Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and Bihar in the next 48 hours, the weather department said. 

 

On Monday, the monsoon trough advanced over more parts of Maharashtra, the remaining parts of Karnataka, some parts of Chhattisgarh, and some more parts of Odisha, Jharkhand, and Bihar, the weather bureau said. Currently, the trough passes through Alibag and Pune in Maharashtra, Nizamabad in Telangana, Dantewada in Chhattisgarh, Balangir and Sundargarh in Odisha, Chatra in Jharkhand, and Gaya and Muzaffarpur in Bihar, the bureau said. 

 

Under the influence of the active monsoon trough and another trough over east India, very heavy rainfall is expected over parts of sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim till Tuesday and from Friday to Sunday, the weather department said. Heavy showers accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are expected to prevail over most parts of east India till Sunday, the department said. Similar weather is likely over several parts of northeast India due to the presence of the monsoon trough and a cyclonic circulation, it said.

 

Weather activity over south peninsula India is expected to intensify, as widespread heavy rainfall is likely over the entire region till Sunday, the weather bureau said. Thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are also expected over the region during the same period, the bureau said. In west India, heavy rainfall is likely over parts of Konkan and Goa till Sunday and over central Maharashtra on Tuesday. Thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are expected over Gujarat, Konkan, Goa, and central Maharashtra till Thursday, and over Marathwada till Wednesday, the bureau said.

 

A wet spell with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds is seen over parts of Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and Vidarbha till Friday, the bureau said.

 

Thundersqualls are expected over parts of Rajasthan till Tuesday, while thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are expected to persist in most parts of northwest India till Sunday, the weather department said.

 

Severe heatwaves are likely in pockets of Vidarbha till Friday, while warm night conditions are likely in the region till Wednesday, the department said. Heatwave conditions are expected in parts of Chhattisgarh till Tuesday, in east Madhya Pradesh till Thursday, in east Uttar Pradesh till Friday, and in Jharkhand on Wednesday and Thursday.  End
