MUMBAI – The US and Iran have agreed on a road map towards reaching a final deal to end the war within 60 days, mediators Pakistan and Qatar said in a joint statement on Monday. In a post on social media platform X, Qatar's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the first session of talks under the framework of the memorandum of understanding concluded early on Monday in Switzerland, and parties from both the US and Iran have agreed to set up a "de-confliction cell" with Lebanon to stop military operations.
Building on the memorandum, the US and Iran have agreed to establish a high-level committee, which will provide oversight on the mediation, and chief negotiators from both countries will regularly report to the committee. The committee will work upon a roadmap towards reaching a final deal within 60 days, and laying the foundation for the immediate commencement of further technical talks. Additionally, a communication line has been formed between the US and Iran to avoid incidents and miscommunication to ensure safe passage of commercial vehicles through the Strait of Hormuz.
Representatives from both Iran and the US have also agreed to ensure adherence to the termination of military operations in Lebanon, as per the memorandum. The conflict between Israel and Lebanon has been a sore topic in the peace talks between the US and Iran, as Tehran has repeatedly asked for military operations in Lebanon to cease as part of the deal. Fighting between Israel and Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah in Lebanon has continued despite the ceasefire agreement.
The peace talks between the US and Iran, which were supposed to begin on Friday in Switzerland, were delayed as Iran was initially a no-show due to the continued military action in Lebanon. Talks finally began on Sunday, but not before repeated roadblocks, which included Iran shutting the Strait of Hormuz once again due to Israel's repeated attacks on Lebanon, after which US President Donald Trump threatened to attack Tehran if it did not stop Hezbollah, the report said.
