MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar in the key markets of Uttar Pradesh rose in anticipation of a rise in demand, traders said. Mills in Maharashtra kept prices steady, they said.

In Uttar Pradesh, mills raised prices by INR 10-INR 15 per 100 kg as there is expectation that demand will rise from bulk consumers such as ice-cream and cold-drink manufacturers, Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India, said. Moreover, mills were not in a hurry meet monthly sales quota, hence, they increased prices, he said.

But demand was as per requirement at higher prices, Gupta said. Traders in the resales market kept prices steady, Gupta added.

Mills in Maharashtra kept prices steady after raising them the previous day, Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association, said. As the monsoon has not hit the state and temperatures are high, traders are concerned that demand from ice-cream and cold-drink manufacturers will rise in the days to come, he said.
