MUMBAI - Securities and Exchange Board of India Chairman Tuhin Kanta Pandey said there was a need to discuss with market participants what barriers are preventing long-tenure equity derivatives contracts from taking off. Speaking to journalists at a post-board meeting press conference Friday, Pandey said there was a place for all kinds of derivatives contracts in the market, hinting that SEBI will not tinker with the weekly index derivatives contracts that are very popular with traders and investors in the market.

The chairman said exchanges were free to launch or promote longer-tenured equity derivatives contracts even today. There is no bar on it, he indicated.

On the latest study on equity derivatives data for 2025-26 (Apr-Mar), Pandey said this will be released in July. In response to a question on low cash market trading volume, the SEBI chairman also said liquidity in the cash market had improved considerably in the last couple of years but the market regulator was keen on increasing it further.
