NEW DELHI – Amid growing domestic criticism of the US-Iran peace deal for allegedly being more favourable to Tehran, US President Donald Trump Friday called the claims "stupid" and said the war had "finished" Iran and Tehran was not going to get any money for now.

 

A number of Republican senators have objected to the $300 billion reconstruction fund that Iran is to receive as part of the deal. They fear the money would be used to "sponsor terrorism".

 

"The war has diminished Iran! It doesn't, any longer, have an Air Force, a Navy, Antiaircraft Equipment, Radar, or practically anything else," Trump posted on social media. "And yet the Democrats say that Iran is better off now than it was four months ago. Can you imagine getting away with that? How stupid can some people be?"

 

In another post, the president wrote, "We didn't meet out of desperation, Iran did. They are FINISHED! We'll play out the 60 days. They get no money, not ten cents!"

 

The remarks come a day after Iran's supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, claimed after the signing of a memorandum of understanding to end the war that Trump was "desperate" for a deal and used "all kinds of leverage" to secure it.

 

Meanwhile, with Israel continuing its attacks on Lebanon--despite the US telling Tel Aviv to hold back--has jeopardised the prospects of lasting peace. US Vice-President J.D. Vance has already postponed his trip to Switzerland to lead a new round of talks with Iran.  End
