NEW DELHI – Futures contracts of most spices on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange closed lower Friday. Coriander contracts ended slightly down as traders booked profits after prices hit a fresh record high. Turmeric prices fell amid subdued domestic demand and high supplies, but brokerages said expectations of improved export demand to West Asia are likely to support prices going ahead.

The most active August contract of CORIANDER fell 0.3% to INR 14,700 per 100 kilograms, after hitting a fresh record high of INR 14,936 earlier in the day. The contract ended slightly down, breaking a five-day winning streak. Prices had risen amid sustained demand from domestic processors and improving sentiment about exports.

"Healthy industrial offtake, coupled with expectations of a gradual recovery in export demand, is likely to keep overall market sentiment positive and support prices in the near term," SMC Global Securities said.

The most active July contract of JEERA rose 1.1% to INR 20,990 per 100 kg, supported by steady domestic demand and improving export sentiment. "Market participants remain optimistic that easing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East (West Asia) could gradually revive export demand from key importing countries," SMC Global said.

The brokerage expects the contract to trade higher in the range of INR 20,340–INR 21,040 as improved export demand is expected to absorb available supplies and keep prices supported in the near term.

The most active August contract of TURMERIC fell 1.4% to INR 16,878 per 100 kg, weighed by higher arrival and subdued demand at prevailing rates. "Average weekly arrivals across major markets surged 249% week-on-week to 10,747 tonnes," SMC Global Securities said.

Although arrivals remain significantly higher than last year, expectations of stronger export demand and demand from stockists and domestic processors are expected to keep prices supported in the near term, SMC Global said.
