MUMBAI – Benchmark equity indices ended on a negative note, after rising for five straight sessions, dragged down by a sharp fall in information technology stocks after IT bellwether Accenture's weak sales guidance sparked concerns over discretionary spending. Crude oil prices rebounded to around $81 per barrel intraday amid uncertainty over the outcome of peace talks between the US and Iran, after Switzerland confirmed the talks had been postponed.

Further, fresh attacks by Israel on Lebanon, raised concern about the preliminary deal turning into a final agreement. Some reports also noted that peace talks had been suspended due to ongoing Israeli air strikes. This came a day after US forces lifted the naval blockade on Iranian ports and coastlines as part of the interim peace deal. At 1557 IST, the August Futures contract of Brent Crude came off highs and was 0.6% lower at around $79 per barrel.

Friday, the Nifty 50 index closed at 24013.10, down 154.90 points or 0.6%. The BSE Sensex settled at 76802.90, down 607.08 points or 0.8%. Over the week, the indices fell around 2?ch. "The equity markets witnessed profit booking following the recent relief rally, as investor sentiment was dampened by the unexpected cancellation of peace talks between the US and Iran," Vinod Nair, head of research at Geojit Investments, said in a note. In the near term, investors are likely to adopt a cautious tone, with participants awaiting greater clarity on the peace deal and monitoring the slow progress of the southwest monsoon, he added.

Broader market indices continued to show resilance and closed 0.1-0.6% higher. Small-cap indices ended 0.4-0.6% higher, outperforming their mid-cap and benchmark peers. Sectoral indices ended on a mixed note, with Nifty IT leading the losses while Nifty Healthcare and Nifty Pharma were the top gainers.

Information technology stocks crashed Friday, with many hitting multi-year lows after IT bellwether Accenture scaled down its sales growth guidance for the financial year 2025-26 (Sept-Aug) to 3-4% from 3-5?rlier. Excluding an estimated 1% impact from US federal business, Accenture now expects its revenue for the full financial year to grow 4–5%, compared with the earlier guidance of 4-6%. With Accenture's weak outlook, analysts now expect a slowdown in earnings of domestic IT companies in the June and the September quarters, which are otherwise considered seasonally strong. The Nifty IT index settled around 4% lower at 27426.85 points after falling to an over-three-year low of 26634.50 points intraday.

Shares of index heavywight Reliance Industries fell 1.4%. Earlier in the day, the company's board approved the draft red herring prospectus for the initial public offering of its subsidiary, Jio Platforms. The IPO includes fresh issue of up to 270 million shares.

Shares of another index heavywight HDFC bank fell around 1% after the Reserve Bank of India approved the extension of tenure of interim part-time Chairman Keki Mistry until Sept. 18 or until the appointment of a regular part-time chairman, whichever is earlier. The bank had appointed Mistry as part-time chairman for three months after Atanu Chakraborty resigned in March. Chakraborty had cited differences with the management over "values and ethics" as the reason for his resignation. Shares of the lender traded ex-dividend Friday for the final dividend of INR 13 per share announced for FY26.

Shares of most defence companies rose Friday, with the thematic Nifty India Defence rising around 1% to 9587.50 points. Shares of Bharat Dynamics closed nearly 5% higher and was among the top gainers in Nifty 200. Reports said that India was close to securing another major defence export agreement, with negotiations for the sale of BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles to Vietnam reaching the final stage.

Shares of The New India Assurance Co rose over 13%, extending gains for the second straight session after the National Stock Exchange late Wednesday filed its long-awaited draft papers for initial public offering, as part of which the company will sell nearly 11 million shares of the exchange. NTPC rose over 1% amid reports that the state-owned energy company has begun installing battery energy storage systems of 5 gigawatt-hour capacity at its coal-fired power plants. The initiative, with an estimated investment of INR 50 billion, seeks to reduce renewable energy curtailment, according to a report by The Economic Times. Further, the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission has approved a cost-plus tariff framework, allowing NTPC to recover fixed charges and returns while storing excess solar and wind power.
