MUMBAI – Prices of chana and masur were steady, while prices of tur showed mixed trends in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Tur prices rose in some markets amid concern about the delay in progress of monsoon in key producing regions, they said. Chana prices are likely to rise after mid-July due to higher demand for festivals, while masur prices could remain unchanged amid limited demand, they said.

CHANA prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 6,000-INR 6,050 per 100 kg, said Raja Jain, a local trader. Prices were unchanged as weak demand for chana was on a par with its low supply, he said. Arrivals of chana have reduced as farmers are currently preparing for sowing kharif crops, he said. A few weeks ago, arrivals had risen as farmers were offloading stocks to finance their expenses for the sowing season, such as purchasing fertilisers and seeds. "Now arrivals will rise only once sowing is done and farmers have time to come to markets again," he said. 

Prices are expected to remain largely steady till at least mid-July, as demand is expected to remain tepid, Jain said. After mid-July, demand for festivals which take place from August is likely to support prices, he said. Demand is also likely to rise by mid-July as the monsoon is likely to have begun in full swing across the country, increasing the consumption of chana dal, or processed chana, and besan, or chana flour, he said. 

Prices of chana in Delhi were steady at INR 5,950 per 100 kg, traders said.

TUR prices in Akola, Maharashtra, were steady at INR 8,000-INR 8,050 per 100 kg, said Ashok Gupta, a local trader. Prices have been largely range-bound in the last few days, fluctuating by INR 100 per 100 kg depending on market sentiment, he said. The market is currently monitoring the progress of monsoon, and reports about a further delay in rainfall over key producing regions such as Maharashtra could support prices in the near term.

However, Gupta believes that lower acreage and subsequently lower tur production are unlikely to impact prices significantly as the government holds ample stocks. "The government will begin selling its stocks if we have a production problem this year," he said. Though arrivals of the crop have begun to decline, it is unlikely to support prices as demand remains muted, he said. "I cannot say what will happen to prices in the near-to-medium term. It is a wait-and-watch situation right now due to the weather developments," he said.

Prices of tur in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, rose by INR 50 per 100 kg to INR 8,200-INR 8,300 per 100 kg Friday, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.

MASUR prices in Indore were steady at INR 5,975-INR 6,000 per 100 kg Friday, Jain said. Prices were steady amid tepid market activity, he said. While arrivals of the rabi crop have declined, demand remains largely need-based, keeping prices steady, he said. In the near term, even if domestic arrivals stop completely, a rise in prices is unlikely due to the availability of imports and the stocks held by the government, he said.

Prices of the moti variety of masur in Lalitpur, Uttar Pradesh, were steady at INR 6,000-INR 6,300 per 100 kg, according to the association.  End
