MUMBAI – The southwest monsoon trough is likely to resume its progress over the western parts of the country after more than two weeks, as conditions are favourable for the trough to advance over more parts of Maharashtra around Tuesday, the India Meteorological Department said. The western branch of the trough has been in the same position since Jun. 8. Conditions are also favourable for the trough to move over more parts of Telangana, Odisha, Jharkhand, and Bihar, and some parts of Chhattisgarh around Tuesday, the weather department said.

Currently, the monsoon trough passes through Harnai and Solapur in Maharashtra, Hyderabad and Bhadrachalam in Telangana, Koraput and Phulbani in Odisha, Ranchi in Jharkhand, and Muzaffarpur and Jamui in Bihar, the weather department said. The eastern branch of the trough has been in the same position since Jun. 12.

The movement of the monsoon trough is likely to cause heavy rainfall over parts of Konkan and Goa on Tuesday and Wednesday, the department said. Thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are expected over several parts of west India till Thursday.

Under the influence of the active monsoon trough, very heavy rainfall is likely over sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on Monday, while heavy rainfall is expected to persist over most parts of east India till Thursday, the weather bureau said. Thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are also expected over most parts of the region till Thursday, the bureau said.

Very heavy rainfall is also likely over Assam and Meghalaya till Tuesday, the weather department said. Heavy rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are expected over several parts of northeast India till Thursday, the department said.

Heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are likely over multiple parts of south peninsula India till Thursday. Strong surface winds are expected over parts of coastal Karnataka, Kerala, and Lakshadweep on Sunday and Monday, and over south interior Karnataka during the weekend.

In central India, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are likely over most parts till Tuesday, while thundersqualls are expected over parts of west Madhya Pradesh till Saturday, the weather bureau said.

Heightened weather activities are expected to continue over multiple parts of northwest India in the next few days due to the influence of several cyclonic circulations, a seasonal trough, and a western disturbance near and over the region, the bureau said. Thundersqualls are expected to persist over parts of Rajasthan till Saturday, and dust storms are likely over parts of west Rajasthan during the same period. Thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are likely over many parts of northwest India till Thursday.

Heatwave conditions are seen over parts of Bihar till Monday, over east Uttar Pradesh till Wednesday, over Konkan, Goa, central Maharashtra, and Vidarbha till Saturday, and over Telangana till Sunday, the weather department said. Hot and humid conditions are expected to persist in parts of Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand, and north interior Karnataka till Sunday, and Konkan and Goa on Sunday, the department said.  End
