MUMBAI – The iCOMDEX Composite index of the Multi Commodity Exchange of India traded lower Friday as bullion and base metal components were in the red. After opening nearly unchanged at 23543.57 points, the index fell to 23150.48 points at 1102 IST.
Among the three components of the Composite index, the bullion index traded 2.3% lower, as gold declined 2% and silver 3% from the previous day's closing. Bullion prices fell due to hawkish signals from the US Federal Reserve. Nine of the US central bank's 19 policymakers now believe they will need to raise the policy rate this year, according to projections published on Wednesday after the Fed announced its decision to leave the policy rate unchanged in Kevin Warsh's debut policy meeting as chairman.
Inflationary pressures stemming from the West Asia war have prompted a growing number of central banks to either raise borrowing costs or signal moves to tame price growth.
The energy index was up 1.2%, with crude oil trading 1% higher and natural gas down 0.1%. The base metal index fell 0.7%, with copper down 1% and zinc down 0.4%. Aluminium was trading 0.4% lower and lead was down 0.2%.
The MCX iCOMDEX comprises a series of real-time commodity futures price indices and tracks the performance of a basket of commodity futures. It serves as a benchmark for market movements in bullion, base metals, and energy. End
