Andhra Pradesh kharif area up 74% on yr at 148,000 ha as of Wed

MUMBAI – The area under kharif crops in Andhra Pradesh was 148,000 hectares as of Wednesday, up more than 74% from 85,000 hectares a year ago, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. The normal acreage for the season is 3.08 million hectares, of which nearly 5% has been covered so far.

 

Paddy acreage so far was up at 65,000 hectares from 46,000 hectares a year ago, the report showed. The area under maize was down at 3,000 hectares from 4,000 hectares a year ago, and that under bajra fell to 1,000 hectares from 3,000 hectares.

 

The area under tur slipped to 2,000 hectares from 3,000 hectares, while that under urad rose to 2,000 hectares from 1,000 hectares a year ago. Sowing of moong is yet to begin in the state, according to the report.

 

The total area under all oilseeds in the state was up at 11,000 hectares from 8,000 hectares a year ago, the report showed. The area under groundnut rose to 9,000 hectares from 7,000 hectares a year ago, while sesame acreage was unchanged at 1,000. Farmers in the state have not sown soybean yet.

 

Cotton acreage so far rose to 58,000 hectares from 17,000 hectares a year ago, according to the report. The area under sugarcane was also up at 6,000 hectares from 2,000 hectares a year ago. 

 

Kharif crops are sown at the beginning of the southwest monsoon season around June and harvested around October. During Jun. 1-18, Andhra Pradesh recorded 55.6 millimetres of rainfall, 1?low the normal of 56.4 millimetres, according to data from the India Meteorological Department. The southwest monsoon covered Andhra Pradesh entirely on Jun. 12, but the strength of the monsoon trough remains weak, leading to below normal rainfall over the state so far. 

 

As of Friday, water levels in reservoirs across Andhra Pradesh were at 39.1% of their live storage capacity, down from 41.1% a year ago, data from the state's water resources department showed.  End
