India's Jan-Apr pulses imports down 20% on yr at 2.25 mln tn; tur, masur up

MUMBAI – India's total imports of pulses in the first four months of 2026 fell over 20% on year to 2.25 million tonnes, data from the commerce ministry showed. Imports of tur and masur rose, while those of chana, urad, and yellow peas fell during the period, the data showed.
Tur imports during Jan-Apr rose more than 69% from the previous year to 353,295 tonnes, according to the data. India imported 124,412 tonnes of tur from Mozambique, 93,094 tonnes from Tanzania, and 87,175 tonnes from Myanmar. Tur was also imported from Sudan and other countries.
The country imported 637,029 tonnes of masur, up more than 3% on year, the data showed. Imports of masur accounted for the largest share of India's total pulses imports during Jan-Apr at more than 28%. Imports from Australia during the period stood at 357,039 tonnes, while imports from Canada were at 257,233 tonnes. India also imported masur from Russia and the US, among other countries.
India imported 254,906 tonnes of urad during the same period, down more than 22% from a year ago. Top sources of urad imports included Myanmar at 202,198 tonnes and Brazil at 35,354 tonnes. Other sources included Thailand at 11,104 tonnes.
Chana imports fell the sharpest among all major pulses during Jan-Apr, down nearly 49% on year at 596,939 tonnes, the data showed. India imported 570,769 tonnes of chana from Australia, and 24,685 tonnes from Tanzania. Among other countries, India also imported chana from the UK.
Imports of yellow peas fell nearly 22% from a year ago to 362,053 tonnes, according to the data. Yellow pea imports from Canada were the highest at 342,516 tonnes, followed by Russia at 18,750 tonnes. End
