NEW DELHI – The six Lok Sabha members of the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray), who skipped Thursday's parliamentary party meeting in defiance of the party whip, have been provided with "Y-plus" security cover by the Bharatiya Janata Party-led Mahayuti (grand alliance) government in Maharashtra. The decision was taken "in view of the recent probable threats", according to an official letter.

 

"Y-plus" security cover consists of 11 armed security personnel, of whom six provide round-the-clock protection while five guards remain stationed at the protectee's residence. The six members of Parliament who have been provided the security are Sanjay Deshmukh, Sanjay Jadhav, Sanjay Dina Patil, Nagesh Patil Ashtikar, Om Raje Nimbalkar, and Bhausaheb Waghchaure. According to media reports quoting sources, these lawmakers have met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and expressed their desire to leave their parent party and merge with Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena.

 

At a press briefing Thursday, Shiv Sena (UBT) Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Raut said the "traitors" will not be spared by the people who elected them. He said the party has initiated action against the lawmakers for defying the whip and failing to attend the meeting. He said the party will seek their disqualification from the Lok Sabha. All attempts by the party to contact the absent lawmakers had failed, Raut said.

 

The defection by Uddhav Thackeray's parliamentarians comes days after at least 19 of the 28 Lok Sabha members of the All India Trinamool Congress broke away from Mamata Banerjee and merged with a little-known Tripura-based outfit called the Nationalist Citizens Party of India. They also announced their support to the BJP-led government at the Centre.

 

Last month, the central government had provided "Y"-category Central Industrial Security Force commando security to Trinamool Congress lawmaker Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, who was said to be leading the rebel group, days before the breakaway faction came out in the open.  End
