NEW DELHI – Futures contracts of most spices on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange closed higher Thursday. Despite higher supplies, coriander contracts hit a fresh record high due to sustained domestic demand and expectations of improved export demand amid easing tensions in West Asia.

"Market participants are optimistic that the cessation of the US-Iran conflict could facilitate a gradual recovery in export demand from key Middle Eastern destinations," SMC Global Securities said. India ships about 15-20% of its spices to West Asia and prolonged disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz have impacted exports.

The most active August contract of CORIANDER rose 3.2% to INR 14,748 per 100 kg, extending gains for the fifth session amid sustained domestic demand. The contract hit a record high of INR 14,748 earlier in the day due to expectations of improved export demand amid easing tensions in West Asia.

The market expects improved export demand to absorb abundant supplies and limit downside pressure, SMC Global Securities said. "Arrivals across major mandis rose by 45% year-on-year to 47,185 tonnes, compared with 32,546 tonnes in the corresponding period last year," it added.

The most active July contract of JEERA rose 0.3% to INR 20,750 per 100 kg. The contract rose slightly due to improved demand at prevailing rates and strong sentiment on the export front. "Although arrivals in major APMC mandis surged by 91% to 11,291 tonnes, strong domestic offtake and hopes of normalisation in export inquiries are likely to keep prices supported in the near term," SMC Global Securities said

The most active August contract of TURMERIC fell 0.2% to INR 17,100 per 100 kg as demand eased at higher price levels. The contract hit an over four-month high of INR 17,340 earlier in the day. In addition, daily arrivals have increased across major markets, creating a temporary supply glut and keeping buyers at bay.

"Farmers who had previously held stocks in anticipation of higher prices have increasingly entered the market, contributing to greater near-term supply," SMC Global said.

A slowdown in export demand from select markets also weighed on demand. "Export demand remained stable on a cumulative basis, although fresh orders from key markets such as Europe and the US slowed during the week," Kedia Advisory said.
